Hi friends! For today’s jam I’m going to be covering Melissa Polinar’s “Try.” Instead recoding in a studio, I recorded this cover on my own, in my room.
I’m not a particular fan of Melissa Polinar—not that I don’t like her or anything, but as in I’m just actually not her fan. I never knew about her until a girl I was subscribed to on YouTube covered Melissa’s song over three years ago, and that video’s always held a special place in my heart since then.
So far, every song I’ve posted here on Jenn’s Jams has been professionally recorded and mixed, but this time I recorded this song at home, in my time with my own microphone (you can read about my process here).
I remember freshman year I would stay up really late doing homework (because I was still trying to adjust to the life of being at a competitive high school) and I would play both her cover and the original version of the song to help me through the nite. There is something about a simple guitar melody and a pretty tune that makes scrambling to finish homework for advanced algebra and trigonometry at 3:30 am a little more bearable. I wanted to try to go for a soft, lullaby feeling with my cover, and I think that might be exactly what I accomplished—I hope.
Both Erica and Melissa have really high and clear voices, which is the polar opposite of what my voice is like: my voice is on the lower side of the scale, and I like to think it’s pretty clear but definitely not as crisp as either of their’s. This is why my version of “Try” is going to be delivered in a different way, but I think it’s unique and true to my style of singing in general—that’s for you all to decide though.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my short but sweet cover!
