There was a family that worked in the circus and they were on their way to Guadalajara. They stopped in San Juan one night where they had a performance. One of the daughters presented her act. To make the act more exciting, they decided to place knives underneath where she was performing. As the 12-year-old performed, she fell, landing on the knives and suffered an instant death. One of the people in the audience had a figurine she called Cihuapilli, which means grand lady in the Nahuatl dialect. They placed the figurine on the daughter’s chest and the girl was revived. This all took place in San Juan de los Lagos which is why Cihuapilli is most commonly known as La Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos.
