Ever since I can remember, I’ve felt a connection to the song “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell. Partially because we share the same last name but also because back before I had Apple music, it was one of the few songs my parents bought so I listened to it often. I didn’t fully understand it, especially the line, “a big yellow taxi took away my old man.” I still can’t figure out what that line means, but when I look at the rest of the lyrics they make more sense to me because of the changes I see around the world. For example, Joni talks about leaving the birds and the bees and I see that climate change has a dangerous impact on wildlife. My post has pieces of the song’s message: we need to appreciate the little things on Earth before they disappear. My illustration features Toph, from The Last Airbender; Maggie, the smallest of the Simpsons; and Bubbles, the fish who worships bubbles.
