Long ago in 2015, when I was eight years old, my younger cousin had moved into our home. I wanted to give him something to help him feel present at the moment, but I didn’t know how I would get him anything, so instead, I decided to make the present instead! I combined a list of his interests into what was then a black-and-white stapled paper stack within the rushed span of two days, before giving it to him.
The Pizza Monsters is a children’s picture book that walks you through a day in the life of three delicious stray critters named Alex, Christina, and Goofy. While each resemble each other closely, all are still unique in their own ways of exploring their individuality as they navigate the human city. At the end of the day, they all meet up and use the skills they learned + things they’ve earned to hatch a mischievous invasion at the best pizza parlor in town.
This cycle, I was given the opportunity to bring a part of this long-awaited dedication makeover to final detail. Along it’s journey, from concept to sketch to picture book to costume to picture book again, I look forward to presenting The Pizza Monsters in their most authentic, original form!
