It’s a long-running idea that women’s sexuality is something to be sublimated and suppressed – we see this over and over again, from ancient Rome to modern movies and shows. When reviewing older and older works of art, I’ve started to notice patterns and coded symbols when something as taboo as women’s sexual autonomy is brought to the forefront. For my pieces, I borrowed motifs from historical books, forbidden knowledge, hands, of power and pleasure, daggers, of cleansing, purity, and fruit. More specifically, the pomegranate is a forbidden fruit and a longtime symbol of wealth and divinity.
