“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray, you’ll never know, dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away,” sang a mother to her toddler in the bus seats across from me. My mother used to sing that to me, and her father to her. The child giggled, and I couldn’t help but smile too.
I’ve always found joy through observation. Sometimes, instead of experiencing the beach, the sunset, or a laughter-filled hangout for myself, I find happiness in noticing and appreciating other people’s sweet moments and connections. Sculpting has taught me to observe life in even more detail, much like I do with my references. I notice the faintest quirk of a smile or the way someone throws their head back in laughter. I love these small, joyful moments and felt they weren’t captured enough. That’s why I wanted to bring them to life in my favorite medium—sculpting.
