Jaylene Li – Goldfish Memory

Can fish be seen as anything more than a pet, especially when it’s a goldfish? In my film Goldfish Memory, a girl has to answer this very question during the unsettling eye of a summer storm. The days are long and boring as her summer break drags on with nothing to expect or do except bike around her neighborhood. So when she meets a particularly unique  goldfish it brings about a change from her boring routine and sparks a journey into new emotional territory.

GOLDFISH MEMORY: SYNOPSIS

Luci, a middle schooler who lives in San Francisco, and her parents who cannot make ends meet, are served a 30 day eviction notice. It is summer break and Luci spends her final days in the neighborhood biking around aimlessly. On an ordinary bike ride, she spots a fish in a dirty tank with very little water left inside. Upon closer inspection, a fish gleams with a bright orange color even through the murky water. Luci decides to take this fish home.

At home, Luci cleans up the fish tank and keeps it in her room. Over the next four weeks, she spends her days with this fish, making crafts, eating, and watching movies. With each passing week, Luci’s room starts to get more and more packed up and bland while the fish tank becomes more decorated and “homey.”

The weeks have now flown by and it is the last day before Luci’s family moves out. A difficult decision lies before her: what will she do with the fish?
