Marley Manalo – The Things We Do For Art

THE PROJECT

This project is just the start of something bigger—something that connects to what I want to do with my life: tell stories that matter. At its core, my short film is about one teenager struggling to be heard, but their story is not unique. Millions of teens experience the same frustration, the same silence. Through this film, I want them to know they’re not alone—that their voices deserve to be heard, and that somewhere, someone is listening.

THE PROCESS

Throughout this journey, I’ve been asking myself: What am I doing? Why am I making this film? More importantly, how do I get others to see what I want to convey? And honestly, I’m not entirely sure. Writing the script, filming, and editing have all been driven more by intuition and creativity than technical skill. Still, I feel like I’m moving in the right direction—at least when it comes to the style and mood I want to create.

Wet clothes and the things we do for art—that’s been the unintentional theme of my recent shoots. Working with Olivia (my actress), I’ve found myself hesitating to ask her to pose in certain places. Our first shoot was at the beach, where I asked her to sit in the water wearing her favorite jeans. The most recent one was at my house, where I had her shower fully clothed, makeup smudging and running. Before filming each uncomfortable scene, we’d look at each other and repeat our new mantra: ‘The things we do for art.’
